Welcome to the Mid Wessex Singers!

We are a friendly group of people who enjoy singing choral music in parts. Since our formation in 1999 we have performed two concerts a year, at Christmas and in Spring. Under the guidance of our Musical Director, Graham Coatman, we are now expanding our repertoire and range of events. In 2017 we started an annual  ‘Come and Sing Day’, and in 2018 extended our season to include a summer term, with an informal performance of light music to family and friends at our Summer Soiree. Also in 2018 we added an Autumn concert to our schedule.

As a registered charity we also provide entertainment to people in local care homes and sheltered housing and make donations to other charities from the proceeds of our concerts.

We practise on Tuesday evenings during term time from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m in the West Street Church Hall in Somerton TA11 7PR. New members are always welcome.  We do not hold auditions – just come along one Tuesday evening or contact us for more information.  Membership is on a subscription basis, currently £45 per term for the Autumn and Spring terms, paid at the beginning of term or half-termly.  The Summer Term is paid on a weekly basis, currently £3.50 a week,

Upcoming Events

Understandably the Mid Wessex Singers have postponed our lovely concert performance of an Easter Messiah until Spring 2021.  Our best wishes for your safety, health and happiness in a very difficult time, go to all our members, their families, our friends and supporters. We hope to be sharing more positive news with you soon!

Handel’s Messiah – but not as you know it!

Somerton will be the location of an exciting, operatic performance of an Easter Messiah on Saturday 25 April. This is a rare opportunity to experience Handel’s most famous work in the way it would have been performed in the composer’s day. Directed by Graham Coatman, the Mid Wessex Singers, with soloists and accompanied by a Baroque ensemble will tell the story of Easter through Handel’s exuberant music. So, not the standard big chorus and orchestra, but a small chamber choir, with the soloists and musicians in a close arrangement, enabling a deeper expression of the music and text to deliver the Easter story in a more dramatic fashion.

Handel made frequent revisions to his music and some of these alternatives will be included. All the favourite, well known and exciting numbers will be there, such as the Hallelujah Chorus and ‘I Know that my Redeemer Liveth’, but the intimate quality of the music in a choir and orchestra of chamber proportions will allow the beauty and sentiment of Handel’s music to shine through.

The concert will take place in St Michael’s Church in Somerton at 7.30 pm on Saturday 25 April. For further information visit www.midwessexsingers.co.uk, e-mail info@midwessexsingers.co.uk or call the Secretary on 07929 803097.

Mid Wessex Singers, a registered charity, will make a donation from concert proceeds to the Somerton Area Dementia Action Alliance.
