We came …. we sang …. we conquered!

What a fantastic and rewarding day we had on 8th February in Long Sutton Village Hall. Mid Wessex Singers hosted a ‘Come and Sing’ open day, inviting all who fancied a thorough vocal workout. A lovely melange of 29 people from other choirs, ex-members of MWS and brave individuals, who just love singing, attended. All were made welcome with hot drinks, biscuits and home-made cakes!

Under the tutelage of MWS Musical Director, Alice Dicker, we worked our way through choruses from Haydn’s Creation, a challenge for some, even those of us who have been rehearsing the pieces in readiness for our Spring Concert in May. Some courageous souls sang the solo parts with much appreciation from us lesser mortals. They sounded wonderful.

Also on the menu were pieces written by natural voice practitioner, Penny Stone. At first sight these pieces looked quite simple. However, with two, three or four voice parts weaving through and some being sung in rounds, we had to keep our wits about us. The result of all this concentration was a beautiful and satisfying harmonic sound filling the hall.

We were grateful for the excellent services of Alison Pink who acted as our guest accompanist, ably assisted by Sheena Smith, MWS accompanist, who kept the pages turning. Hearty thanks to two very talented people.

So …. we came …. we sang …. we conquered …. and went home smiling …. full of cake!
